1,500 PAIRS OF SHOES FOR KENYA

Hello, my name is Brittany Olin and I’m currently a senior attending Freedom High School in Woodbridge, Virginia. This past summer I was selected to represent, on behalf of Freedom, at Christopher-Newport University’s Commonwealth Leadership Institute (CLI) for approximately two weeks in July. I not only gained the knowledge of understanding the impacts of leadership and the essence of community service, but also excelled in the class and attained three transferable college credits.

As part of successful completion of the course, CLI students were asked to develop a community service project within their own communities. My senior service project for the 2008-2009 school year is to conduct a shoe drive. I have been collecting both new and gently used shoes from communities and schools—including Freedom—in the Prince William County area. My goal is to collect and distribute approximately 1,500 pairs of shoes to Kenya.

In order to attain my goal and greatly impact the lives of those in Kenya, I’m currently in need of shoes. I’m accepting…

·        New or gently used
·        Any and all types of shoes (sneakers, sandals, dress shoes,
     etc.)
·        Both men and woman’s shoes
·        Any size
·        Children/baby shoes especially, and
·        Also monetary donations to help in the shipping costs of the
     shoes

I greatly appreciate all of your support and plan to hopefully surpass my goal of collecting 1,500 pairs of shoes. As this project will greatly impact the lives of others in need.

NATIONAL MIX-IT-UP DAY
It was National Mix it Up Day on Thursday, November 13 and Freedom High School celebrated it during all lunch shifts. The purpose is to encourage students to sit and intermingle with students that they would not typically converse with on a day to day basis. Students were provided with multicolored wristbands
during their first period classes.  At lunch the students sat at the respective table that matches their wristband.

NEW COUNSELING CENTER GRAND OPENING
School Counselors Offer Guidance and Then Some.....

In 2004, the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) announced that school counselors would no longer be termed "guidance counselors" and would be referred to as " professional school counselors. An article in the December 2004 issue of the "Professional School Counseling Journal" also advocated for identifying school counseling departments as the "professional school counseling department" instead of the "guidance department." In an effort to be consistent with the ASCA, the Office of Student Services asks that counselors be referred to as "school counselors" and a guidance department as "school counseling department."  ...."Communicator", Dec. 1, 2008.

On November 12, 2008, Freedom hosted an "Open House" showcasing its new Counseling Department's Career Center and newly established Resource Room.
