Freedom High School Partnerships

We are proud to announce that a number of meaningful partnerships have been established between Freedom High School and local business and community organizations. Partnership agreements emphasize Prince William County ’s commitment for schools and business/community partners, working with Partnership Prince William, “to enhance human interaction among adults and students by sharing their cumulative knowledge, skills, and resources to positively impact student achievement, work readiness, and community involvement.” Our business and community partners are identified below, with a brief summary of opportunities that may result through the partnership, a contact person, and a website link.

2006-07 Grant Awards & Donations:
  • $5,000 grant award given by AOL to FHS in order to continue the school-wide project Bits! Bytes! Biographies! Students perform research about a person of interest, explore related career opportunities, and create and present a WebQuest that is critiqued by their peers.  The grant was submitted by librarians Valerie Hillyer and Jennifer Roberts and IT specialist, Libby Benson. 
  • $10,000 grant was awarded to FHS by FortBelvoir in order to implement ProjectPASS – Pulling All Stops for SOLs for a second year. The grant funds paid for 5 LCD projectors, 6 smartboards, and incentives for student review and remediation sessions.  The grant proposal was submitted by Jeanie McGough, Science Department Chair.
  • $10,000 donation from Job2k/PWC Greater Manassas Chamber of Commerce (co-chairs Deborah Jones and Laurie Wieder) for the FHS/House after school program initiative.  The proposal was submitted by Cheryl Secrist, Career Counselor.
  • $2,500 donation from CodePro Inc., to the Freedom HS Fine Arts and Business Departments (Jim Orona III, President.)  $1,500 to support the Orchestra/Band program and $1,000 to support Computer Programming and Web Design.
  • 2,500 worth of Class B manufactured sand from Vulcan Materials, Inc. to be used in the long jump pits.
  • $5,000 grant from the PWC Education Foundation for the grant proposal "Operation New Directions."  The grant proposal was submitted by Kristie Bowie, SPED Department.  She will be implementing more vocational education resources and SMART Board technology in the severely disabled classes.
  • Eagles Branch was named the 2006-2007 Branch of the Year by the Apple Federal Credit Union.
  • $1,000 donation from Preston Caruthers, developer of Belmont Bay for the FHS/House after school program initiative.  The proposal was submitted by Cheryl Secrist, Career Counselor. 
  • 2005-06 Grant Awards & Donations:           
    • $10,000 Hands on the Land Grant was received by Meadowood, SMRA in partnership with Freedom HS, to provide equipment and materials for student field experiences.  The proposal was sumbitted by Theresa Jefferson, Meadowood and Dr. Brademan, CENS Coordinator.
    • $10,000 grant award was awarded to FHS by AOL in order to implement the proposed school-wide project Bits! Bytes!     • PWC Government, Department of Risk Management donated $500.00 to the CENS program so that a group of students could attend the 2006 Environment Virginia Conference, where they gave multiple presentations.
    • The South Bridge Wal-Mart awarded CENS students a $340.00 matching grant fund donation to help pay for an environmental education field trip.   
     
    THANKS to Build-A-Bear, Wal-Mart, Claire’s, Dominoes, and Krispy Kreme for providing gift certificates and/or free/discounted food to support our Freedom Incentive Program.
    THANKS to Build-A-Bear, Chick Fil-A, Claire’s, Dominoes, Famous Dave’s, Hallmark, McDonald’s, Red Robin, Shoppers Food Warehouse, and Wal-Mart for providing gift certificates, gift cards, donating food and/or merchandise for our SOL Saturday activity.

    Partnership with Apple Federal Credit Union
    Through the partnership with Apple FCU, a Student Run Branch has opened at Freedom HS.  Our Apple branch is open during all lunch shifts on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday every week.  Students and staff have the opportunity to open accounts with Apple, make deposits, withdrawels, and are eligible for the many services offered by Apple Federal Credit Union.

    The partnership with HOLA, Hispanic Outreach Leadership Action, will promote collaboration between the Hispanic community and Freedom High School .

    The partnership with IKEA will promote environmental education and community awareness.  IKEA sponsors an annual earth day contest and has donated prizes for students and supported the horticulture program with plant donations.

    LEEP – Local Environmental Education Partners

    The LEEP partnership will allow FHS to network and collaborate with other Prince William County agencies and groups whose goal is to promote environmental education. This partnership will provide opportunities for student volunteers, internships, environmental activities and field trips, guest speakers, community service, teacher in-service, and curriculum enhancement.     Partnership with Northern Virginia Community College

    Opportunities that will be possible through the FHS and NVCC partnership are: support with the environmental & natural sciences specialty program, ESOL, technical education, tutoring program, mentoring, community outreach, dual enrollment classes, and collaboration between NVCC and Freedom High School faculty.

    As our community and business partner, Northern Virginia Community College has purchased a Freedom Flag. The flag was presented to Freedom HS by Dr. Cook, Interim Provost, at our dedication ceremony on September 11, 2004 . The goal of the Freedom Flag Foundation is to “establish the Freedom Flag as a national symbol of remembrance for September 11, 2001 , and to support educational efforts of teaching future generations about the tragic events, and many lives lost on that date.”

    Partnership with Prince William Library System

    Prince William Library System and Freedom HS will work together to promote the Viva! Van Community Outreach Program. The Viva! Van will regularly visit the Todos Supermarket parking lot to provide Spanish, English, and bilingual books for all age groups that may be checked out on a “read and return” basis.

    The partnership with the Belmont Bay Science Center will provide opportunities for staff development and teacher in-service. This partnership also provides volunteer and field research opportunities for students. Ultimately, the Belmont Bay Science Center will be a field trip destination.

    Partnership with Todos Financial Services

    Mr. Castro, along with the Hispanic Council of the Chamber of Commerce, partnered with Freedom HS to launch our Student Hispanic Mentorship Program which links students to hispanic business leaders in the community. The FHS Career Center is partnering with Todos Financial Services for a Community Fair to be held at Freedom HS on Saturday, May 5th from 12-6pm. This will be a free event for the public. FHS students will be offered paid positions to work at the Fair as greeters, as well as have an opportunity to job shadow any of the vendors. Vendors will be local profit and non profit organziations and businesses that will highlight their services to the community. Entertainment, Food, and Music will be provided; and a car from one of the local dealerships, is expected to be raffled.
